Background information
"In his multifaceted oeuvre, Gerhard RICHTER has repeatedly used photographs as the basis for his works. His blurred paintings based on photographic originals have been widely studied by art researchers. In contrast, however, he has also painted directly over commercially available photographic prints with oil paint. Inspired by the random blobs and traces of color on the originals for his paintings, he created pictorial overpaintings. Such overpaintings were already to be found in his 'Atlas'. Those usually small-format paintings are almost without exception in private ownership and are rarely shown publicly. Even in these subjects, covered by a painterly veil, Gerhard RICHTER proves himself to be a 'master at keeping his distance', as Robert Storr once put it.
