Background information
"'Southward - Southward' looks at photo-historically familiar terrain. The book focuses on the region where, in the summer of 1936, James Agee and Walker EVANS met the three sharecroppers whose families they were portraying for their 'Let Us Now Praise Famous Men' project.
Content
Bettina LOCKEMANN's photographs address landscapes and people, places of life and work, and local economic and social contexts. In addition, there are thematic complexes of historical facts such as slavery, the cotton economy, and the Civil Rights Movement. These experience an extension into the present around the discourse of dismantled Southern monuments. The photographs are accompanied by short texts that tell short stories, describe the personal approach of the photographer and classify places and people.
